The trio of Lauren Bacall, Martha Vickers, and Dorothy Malone (in but one scene) is devastating. It's a shame that Vickers's role was curbed because of the Production Code and then cut down to better highlight Bacall. By all means, Bacall is great, but from the moment she enters, Vickers astonishes. Bogart brings the right amount of grit to Marlowe, e.g., enough to help raise this from mere detective story to full-on noir. The notoriously gap-filled plot is really not a problem and somehow does not at all impede the film's enjoyment—kudos to Hawks for restraining himself from straining to fix that issue when it probably would have just ruined things. The Big Sleep’s place as a top-ten noir is secure in my book.
