Edward G. Robinson was a national treasure. He could go from fickle, terrifying mobster (Key Largo) to a pitiable 'everyman' putz (both here in 'Scarlet Street' and again in 'The Woman in the Window'.) And that's not even mentioning his scene-stealing performance in Double Indemnity! Whatever the role, he was always nothing but totally engaging to watch, and Scarlet Street is no exception. I'd rank this as Fritz Lang's second best Noir, after The Big Heat. It's one of those movies where you simply watch a sad-sack of a man make poor decisions all the way down the drain, and yet it's still captivating all the way. Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea are both fantastic as well.
